About me
Hi
My name is Maja and I set up Targeted Tutoring after many years teaching children from Reception to Year 6 in state and independent schools.
Whole class teaching is great fun, but classrooms can be challenging environments for many children so I decided to leave the classroom and focus on tutoring children 1-1 and in small groups. Many children will benefit from a little extra support or attention to help build their confidence in targeted areas, others might thrive with a tutor who is able to adapt to their needs or challenge them to reach their potential. I love seeing children gaining confidence and pride in their work and making progress – it’s what teaching is about.
Getting to know each child and learning about their likes, dislikes and motivation, is the key to 1-1 teaching. With over fifteen years of classroom teaching, I am able to draw on my experience of working with children to help them enjoy their learning journey and achieve success. I have teaching and leadership qualifications (QTS, NPQSL), extensive subject knowledge and have led Maths, English and Assessment, which helps me to find lots of different ways to engage children. Alongside my curriculum knowledge, I have experience of teaching verbal and non-verbal reasoning to prepare children for independent school entrance exams.
Before teaching, I worked in as a researcher in London for a retail leisure company (research is an essential skill for teaching) and then as a life coach with people looking to make changes in their lives.
Along came children and I am a very proud mum of two girls at university. Books and puzzles are a bit part of our life. I am bonkers about books! Children’s books, grown-ups’ books – all kinds of books. I read them, gift them and teach with them. My classrooms always had ‘Mrs Brattisani’s Library’ on a special bookcase, the children loved it and now it’s moved to my tutoring space.
When I’m not reading, I can be found dipping into cold water, swimming, cooking and trying to solve puzzles.
